Cryogenmash enters new market

25.02.2026

The Cryogenmash plant in Balashikha has completed the manufacture of the first turbo expander for cooling natural gas. The development and then production of this complex high-tech equipment took less than a year. The machine has passed a full cycle of factory tests and will be sent to a gas processing plant in Siberia any time soon, where it will operate as a part of a low-temperature rectification plant. The refrigeration capacity of this expander is 5 MW, the rotor nominal rotation frequency is equal to 19,500 rpm; the active magnetic suspensions are used.

The history of the turboexpander-compressor sets production at Cryogenmash originated in the 1940s, it was mainly designed to the air cooling and its further separation into oxygen, nitrogen and argon. The turboexpander is the expansion machine designed to cool gas under the high pressure while generating energy. At the same time, it is able to cool gas for more than 70 degrees, reaching the outlet temperature up to -150 °C. The key component of the device is the impeller, which can rotate at a speed of up to 80,000 rpm and more.

In total, Cryogenmash has manufactured more than two thousand of such machines.  It has been decided to develop the idea for working with natural gas.

"This machine is a core of the gas processing plant located in Siberia. At the current moment, the equipment from an unfriendly country is used there. Our turboexpander will replace the imported equipment and increase the plant's capacity, strengthening the country's process sovereignty," said Evgeny Matveev, General Director of JSC "Cryogenmash".

After supply to the Customer's site, the equipment will be installed, adjusted and be subjected to the final commissioning. The received references will allow Cryogenmash to enter the gas industry market with a new product and increase the accumulated knowledge and competencies.
